Back in 2013, where we gather for a short moment of sharing laughter and gossiping like your friendly neighborhood’s mums, some of us planned to do a special visit to Japan planned for March 2014, a great month for Sakura viewing, where we plan to wrote our experience in JKT48Stuff to deepened our cultural exchange bonds with our Japanese counterpart. Those who will go will be Me, RHKilis, Pitra, and a friend of ours, Pipu.

Alas, due to our own failure to planned (and organize) our flights, we were unable to enjoy our trip together and got separated along the way. Pipu got the first batch at middle of March, RHKilis then went to Japan next from KL, Pitra got the third batch and even share the same plane that brought RHKilis back to KL. And Me? I got the last batch at the middle of April which then again proves my disorganized nature

For my trip, I decided to make a report for places to visit in early spring in Japan and my recommendation to those places. Aside from me, my kind-of vvota mum also joined me in this trip for the sake of visiting my younger brother who currently living his life in Japan.

So without further ado, my report. And mind you, especially photography snobs out there, I’m not a photography expert at all. So don’t expect any high quality, artistic photos here. All that you will ended up with is a rough photos that I believe is not your cup of tea whatsoever.

On My Way to Japan

Decided to go with JAL. And boy, it was excruciatingly HOT inside the airplane . So yeah, if you decided to go with JAL, don’t bother yourself to bring with you a coat or anything, in fact, bring along with you a mini fan or something.

Nothing really interesting to report on the airplane that brought me to Japan aside from the -extremely- gorgeous view of Mt. Fuji when we an hour or so left in our flight before we landed in Narita. I didn’t took a picture of it tho’ since all that I can think about is how to cool my sweating self off.

If you are wondering how hot it was inside the cabin, lemme give you a very detailed visual after 7 hrs of flight :

As for JAL, um..perhaps ANA or Garuda will be a much better choice if what you are looking for is comfort in economy class. But if what you are looking for is the total allowed luggage size, with 23Kgx2 + 1 cabin size, JAL is the way to go.

As for means of communication, I decided not to rent any phones while in Japan to see how much will it cost if you decided not to rent any phones for data/internet. Ironically, I decided to use a local Indonesian provider, XL, instead of JKT48’s partner Indosat for its cheaper data roaming access in Japan (7.5 USD per day compared to Indosat’s 15 USD per day).

For Indonesian first timer visitors, My younger brother tried with Telkomesel once and uh…don’t, don’t ever use Telkomsel for any data roaming purposes. It will kill your wallet instantly after 7-10 days of prolong stays with a thousand USD bill.

We will compare the cost once either RHKilis, Pitra, or Pipu done with their report. Hopefully one of them rented a phone (I believe Pipu rented a phone).

I also decided not to take any JR Pass offer for transportation means and went with the traditional way of buying and recharging Suica Card on the spot since I believe Pitra already went with a JR Pass.

Asakusa Temple

Arrived in Narita at around 7 AM and for the first time ever, I felt Japan weather in early spring. It is still cold but not that chilly cold. At 10 to 15 degree Celsius, it is not much different in temperature compared to places such as early morning Berastagi. As someone who often spends hours in a freezing cold data center, I find that the temperature in Japan in early spring is really friendly. So don’t worry about flu-inducing weather or anything like that.

From Narita, we visited Asakusa Temple. While my mum really enjoyed the scenery of the temple, I find myself pretty much more interested in the markets around the temple. With many traditional things on display as well as traditional food stalls, it really piqued my interest. Spend some times there before we meet up with my younger brother.

Oh, and make sure to buy and taste the sweet ocha in a small stall with a really friendly short haired cute girl as the seller. She can speak English a little bit. The sweet ocha tasted really good. Well, since we are in a tourist invested area, I guess asking for a picture or two won’t hurt. And yep, she said it’s OK.

A simple earnest smile that I really missed on the flight. I’m glad I came to Asakusa Temple and wander around the market area.

Oh and by the way, lemme introduce you to the Angga clan :

Ginza

Uh….fashion lovers, this is your place. Go for a shopping spree here all you want. They have Uniqlo, Burberry, Svarovski, and a lot more here. Me? Nah, not my cup of tea, or that’s what I thought until Mt. Joss took me to a place we affectionately dubbed : Ginza48. More on that later on.

I literally spend hours here just sitting and waiting in a small coffee shop feeling bored.

On to Osaka!

At noon, we boarded another flight to Osaka. I sweated a lot when I landed in Osaka, so I guess you can already guess which flight I took. Yep, JAL

We went directly for our hotel (Hyatt Regency Osaka) after we arrived in Osaka (BAAAATH!). Went for a decent Yakiniku dinner at Vikings and went to sleep since we gonna do some more travel to Kyoto and Gifu the next day by bus.

Heian Shrine/Heian Jingu

Another great place for sightseeing for tourist. The scenery is nice especially with its white…uh..sand? I dunno the exact wording in English, sorry.

There’s so many people here and since I hate big crowds, I find the best place to really enjoy the serene situation of the shrine is on the left side of the entrance to the shrine. It’s the less crowded space of the shrine and I can sit while enjoying the pine trees around and the other scenery without so much noises. And THAT is heaven, ladies and gentlemen.

Peaceful and totally contradict its name that might frowned upon by Indonesian if it was read the wrong way (Hei Anjing!)

Nishijin Textile Center

What to enjoy here you ask? Well, of course, the Kimono Mini Fashion Show!

A Break

It’s already night when we arrived in our next hotel, Otsu Prince Hotel. Decided to spend the night at Starbucks while enjoying the full moon together with my younger brother and two new friends we met during the trip, Mpris and Mel. Intrigued to try the nearby Pachinko Parlor, but in the end decided not to.

Next route : Along the road to Toyama.

Iwasaki

The city who supplied many restaurants in Japan with food replicas. That’s right, city. This city main source of industry is food replicas. Many food replicas home industry is located in this city. While not every home industry will be so welcoming to visiting tourists, we were pretty lucky to found one who open to visiting tourists.

So what do we do there? Well, we made food replicas! They will teach you how to made one, of course by using somewhat lower quality wax and not their main production wax. They will teach you how to made three kinds of Tempura as well as a cabbage. Pretty interesting.

See that Japanese guy with blue shirt on the background? He is our Bus Driver, more story about him later on.

Kiyomizudera

I have high hope for this place as I’ve heard many good things about it. And indeed, it will not let you down. Kiyomizudera is a very beautiful site, especially the view from the edge of the wooden platform.

I believe RHKilis got there at the most perfect moment as Sakura is blooming. For my case, there’s just a little bit of Sakura’s left, so I believe RHKilis report will do justice to this site more compared to mine.

There’s also tons of traditional stall selling souvenirs when we “climb” our way there. I bought myself a Kendama . It’s harder than Yoyo! I’m barely able to do two turn Around the Block.

Sannomachi

I personally don’t think that this place is interesting enough. Well, that is, until I saw these Sakuras along the river bank . I think that’s the selling point of this old city to visitors whose goes well with my boring personality . It’s serene and makes a nice place to laid back and just stares hours at the river. Well, that’s exactly what I did and really enjoy while the others went on a shopping spree.

That’s the only picture I took as even unknowingly to myself, I just spent hours there just staring at the river. It is that serene and beautiful.

Shirakawa-Go

The old village in rural Japan known for its Sarubobo doll. People told me that the village was a very poor village back at the world war era and hence the birth of the doll. But after doing my own research, I’ve got my own interest in the history of the village as a once prosperous village trading in gunpowder materials with the Portuguese. History also noted that once the village bought tons of rices from the (perhaps) profit made with the trading.

Either way, it is a very interesting site if you really into old traditional houses and the history behind the village itself. I’m much more interested in their irrigation method and their very well done and ridiculously clean gutter which left me with an impression of : How the hell did they do that?

I believe this site will be much more interesting in terms of scenery in winter or very early spring with snows around. Also noted that there’s a bus that will take you to the “real” side of the village up atop the mountain. I decided not to go.

Another Break

Another break ensues. I am wasted and just went to sleep like a log. The hotel was ANA Crowne Plaza Hotel.

Next Route : To Tateyama we go!

Alpine Route (Midagahara -> Murodo)

Holy shit. Really. Holy shit. This place is AWESOME! Do not, I repeat, Do not, waste a single moment by sleeping on the bus. The scenery on your way from Midagahara to Murodo is just unbelievable.

I failed to took picture of the well known Ice Wall, but perhaps my brother got a few pictures of it on his camera. I’ll update this article again once I got those pictures from him.

Murodo

-1 degree Celsius (30.2 Fahrenheit) when I arrived at this place. While waiting for the going-through-the-mountain-using-man-made-tunnel cable bus to arrive that will take us to Daikanbo for the single pole ropeway, I decided to play a little bit with the snow.

Alas, fog is coming so we can’t do some walking around the Ice Wall.

Daikanbo -> Kurobedaira

The scenery is pretty decent here. Eyegasm.

From Kurobedaira, we once again boarded the going-through-the-mountain-using-man-made-tunnel cable car (not bus this time) to reach Kurobeko where we gonna walk our way on top of Kurobe Dam. There’s absolutely no scenery whatsoever from Kurobedaira to Kurobeko. Well, unless you fancy man-made structure brick and mortar tunnel of course.

Kurobe Dam

We walked on top of the dam. The scenery is pretty awesome with the frozen dam. It is a long walk though since the dam is pretty enormous. I really enjoyed my time here by well…as usual, staring into the frozen dam for hours while walking.

From Kurobe Dam we went directly to Ogizawa where we took a bus to our hotel.

Time for a Break

Reached our hotel, Hodaka View Hotel and spend the night there while wearing Yukata. There’s an Onsen in this hotel, but I decided not to go and just spend some time outside of the hotel while enjoying the scenery.

Oh and by the way, got a direct private lesson on how to tie my Yukata’s obi from a cute hotel lady after I wrongly tied it the Karate-way which prompted a subtle polite laugh from her (Kumite while wearing a Yukata, she remarked ). She even tied it for me while giving me instructions on how to do it. Getting to know a random hotel lady achievement unlocked

Next route : Kawaguchi

Matsumoto Castle

Sakura, Sakura everywhere This castle premise is a Sakura Fest. Saw a lot of people getting prepared for Hanami. Most of them leave the premise soon after though after some tourists with disregards to other people feeling just started to took pictures of those enjoying their Sakura’s viewing. To be honest, I really wanna whack their head.

Anyway, the inside of the castle itself stored some artifact from the old times, but then again, we decided not to enter the castle and just enjoy the premise around the castle which is already a spectacle by its own rights.

Oh and let me introduce you the most friendly (and demanding) school of fish I’ve ever met in my whole life :

They will literally won’t let you touch them unless you gave them food

Gotemba Premium Outlet

No. Never again. As much as people love being in Gotemba Premium Outlet, this place really is not my cup of tea. All that available in that place is just outlets, outlets, and outlets. But then again, Ladies and gents out there who loves shopping, you will love this place as much as I totally love Akihabara. Lots of premium brands outlets with the west wing for Men and east wing mainly for Women. There’s a big Lego and Bandai store there.

Hotel Break

We slept in Jiragonno Fujinoyakata that has a notorious scary story behind it. Around the hotel premise is where there’s a massacre happened back in the old times when a went-crazy general killed nearly the whole village population.

The story is that, even until now, the villagers soul still haunted the place here and there.

And uh…they turn off the main hall electricity as well as locked the whole entrance to the hotel after 11 PM which left me pretty annoyed rather than scared since I can’t find a place to smoke

Next Destination : Back to Tokyo!

Mt. Fuji

Alas, there’s too much fog this time and only the 1st Level is permitted for traveling. So yeah, no pictures as there’s really nothing we can see with fog this thick.

Lake Kawaguchi – Kachi Kachi Ropeway

Beautiful lake, ’nuff said. If I can compare this to the lake in Indonesia, I will compare this with Toba Lake perhaps.

Be very careful when you want to cross the road here though. Crossing the road in this place is tough. The road is not that big but oh boy, the drivers are all driving way too fast for road that small. There’s no traffic light for pedestrian so yeah, just imagine a normal road in Indonesia, replace the cars passing with Indonesian motobikers in your mind, and you’ll be fine crossing it.

Thankfully, we got this nice gentleman keeping tab on those who never experienced the danger of crossing a Moto GP tracks aka normal road in Indonesia.

Near Mt. Fuji Cookie Factory, there’s a small way leading to Kachi-Kachi Ropeway. A ropeway that will lead you to a shrine with marvelous view. There’s a souvenir vending machine here at the Kachi-Kachi Ropeway that will grant you one pressed bronze souvenir with design you chose from a total of 3 different design.

They have some coin operated binoculars near the temple, but this annoying fog keeps the beauty of the lake hidden.

Oh well, time for some mob-style selfie at the shrine, ladies and gentlemen.

Be very careful when you use the photograph taking service there as it is not free and can get a little bit pricey.

Odaiba

Yay! Odaiba! The notorious place for Indonesian fans thanks to Melody and the girls spending much of their time there. There’s a Liberty miniature there that is not exactly what piqued my interest. If I want to see Liberty Statue, then it is much more preferable for me to see the real thing rather than the one here in Odaiba.

What makes me loves Odaiba the most is the street performers. We can hear Jazzy tune being played by the street performers, a comedic magic performance, and a lot more.

I spend my time here watching the street performers which unfortunately I don’t record. As well as enjoying a cup of tea while watching the excellent scenery.

The Bus Driver

On a totally surprising moment, our bus driver, Tamura-san, whom I befriend on the road suddenly asked me about 48 group in general. I told him I knew and BAM! He showed me his stickers of AKB48 under his bus GPS module

He then asked me about JKT48. OH! Great! What a timing, I remember I brought along a Shan’s photos with me and yep, I gave it to him as a gift. Which he then proceed to took a picture of it and upload it on his LINE group

Promoting JKT48 while touring Japan by randomly giving a photo to a bus driver achievement: Unlocked!

He promised me that he will show Shan’s photo to every Indonesian riding his bus in the future

A Break (Somewhat)

We arrived at our last destination, the Tokyo Dome hotel near, well..Tokyo Dome. Here’s a view from my hotel room :

I didn’t stay for too long at the hotel though as I proceed over to my brother’s apartment and spent my night there. While my mum and my brother stays at the hotel.

To make things easier for our return back to Indonesia, We decided to send some of our luggage to Narita via Takkyubin first and foremost.

Oh, and we met this happy local family and share some talks with my limited Japanese. The mum is very very friendly :

Shinjuku

Shinjuku will be my base of operation for my last three days here. My brother’s apartment will be my main “hotel” from now on. First day of my extended stay is dedicated only for three main event :

– Lunch with my brother’s coworkers in Shibuya,
– Meeting with Jo-san, Mr. Yokohama, and Da-Chi.
– Dinner with Japarta, Wotaliano, Mt. Joss, and CleaningStaff joined by Jo-san and Da-Chi

At first I should have a meeting with Mr. Yokohama for a Yokohama visit, but alas, with my schedule, I can’t go sightseeing Yokohama with Mr. Yokohama.

With that being said, let’s get into the first event!

Shibuya

All that my brother told me and my mum was : Let’s meet at the Head Statue in Shibuya. We spent much time looking for that Head Statue , we even stop at the wrong bus station.

After asking here and there for help as well as a little bit of Googling, we arrived in Shibuya where my brother met us. We then walked for another 20 minutes to reach his office (Yaraku).

I really like their office: simple, relaxing, and feels like home with people wandering around in jeans and casual attire. So those who have a dream of working in Japan, pay attention to their website just in case there’s an opening.

After a short introduction we then walked for another 10 minutes to a restaurant providing extremely delicious foods called Sushi Gonpachi. I didn’t order any Sushi tho as I can’t see any sushi offering on the menu. I believe it was my eyes and my tummy playing me a fool. Oh and anyway, the restaurant got a perfect view, but beware to those who afraid of heights, it is scary standing on the protrude edge of the restaurant room as we can clearly see the road below.

Notice the guy standing on the right of the picture? That’s Michele who designed Ferrari’s website, ladies and gentlemen. Oh and the only woman there (aside from my mum)? She’s Anise, with a dream to join JKT48 4th Generation Audition (*runs*). While the gentleman standing beside me is Yamada-san, a fellow 48G fan as well.

Hachiko Statue -> Excelsior

After the lunch, my mum went for Shibuya sightseeing while I decided to go straight ahead to Hachiko statue where I’m gonna meet with Da-Chi. After waiting for a few minutes, I met Da-Chi! We hug as we haven’t seen each others for months!

Right after that, we went straight to Excelsior Coffee shop for a happy meeting with Jo-san and Mr. Yokohama!

Make sure you please Mr. Yokohama as much as possible when he visited your country be it in Indonesia or not since who knows, perhaps he’s giving you permission to marry his daughter . Lemme tell you, his daughter is a joy to behold (Hint: She’s a professional model)

We have some gift sharing moment here where I got three VERY delicious curry bread made by Jo-san. My God, that is simply the best curry bread I’ve tasted in my life. From me…well of course, Photo packs

And this is also the place where I experienced the VIP view of AV Actress scouting process right on the table beside us . I think they were talking about the playing style and the pricing weight for each style

Bari Bari Chicken in Shinjuku

Back to Shinjuku with Da-Chi and Jo-san since Mr. Yokohama have to go home early for his preparation for a book fair two days after.

We went straight to Bari-Bari restaurant and waited for our entourage to come. Soon after, Japarta came, then CleaningStaff, Mt.Joss also came, and last in turn is of course none other than our Captain, Wotaliano or also known as the Nisemono Gaijin (fake foreigner) . My brother also joined us on the same table that night.

We spent some good dinner over at Bari Bari while watching JKT48 on Da-Chi’s brand new Lenovo tablet. I think we might perhaps turn on the volume level a bit too much though

We also did some gift sharing as well with Wotaliano pretty much infatuated with his new turtle’s shell back scratcher.

All of them will also come this May for the handshake event! Well, except for Wotaliano who already planned a pilgrimage on August to both Manado and Pemalang (Ve and Rona ethnic(?) birthplace) and Jo-san who still trying to find the perfect moment for both his schedule and the girls’ schedule.

Back to Apartment

Back to apartment with my brother and went to sleep for tomorrow’s main schedule : Akihabara and Ginza48

Akihabara

Ah…my place, my sanctuary. I promised to meet Da-Chi at around 1 PM in Shinjuku, but my Indonesian habit to travel at least two hours before the meeting time (due to traffic congestion in Indonesia, and I’m still late whatsoever) resulting with me arrived way too early at 11:30 AM

So what do I do? Well, I headed for the nearest smoking area and suddenly, I feel like I’m home in Indonesia

I named the smoking area as Jakarta all of a sudden

Putting that aside, Da-Chi really came at 1 PM sharp, as expected of the on-time behavior of Japanese people, salute.

We boarded the train for Akihabara and we talked so much about the train system in both country. While in Jakarta, Indonesia, the train is simply a one liner; Japan, in this case, Tokyo, got a more complicated line. Both have its own advantage and disadvantage.

We have a plan for a lunch with Japarta first so we decided to meet him at the other side of Akihabara (Not the Electronic one). Met Japarta and went for a….wait for it… SUSHI LUUUNCH! At last!

We went for Ginzo Sushi in Akihabara, as Japarta remarked, a not too pricey sushi establishment but still giving you a great taste, gimmick-free. And oh boy, how he was right. The taste is awesome and even now still linger on my mouth. I really love this place.

What makes it even more great is the waitress. I don’t know her name but she’s very cute and polite!

I told Japarta and Da-Chi about my sudden interest with her and you know what happened next? They asked the waitress to took a picture with me!

And here ya go Ladies and gents, an awkward moment:

I’ll make sure to eat there again sometimes in the future and properly introduce myself to her . And if you ever visited Japan, don’t forget to eat there too!

After lunch, we went for a walk to Japarta’s office (HUGE office!!) and say our goodbye to Japarta at that place. And then together with Da-Chi, we went for Akihabara Electronic City!

Arrived in Akihabara Electronic City and we decided to enjoy the weather first while drinking a cup of coffee in Excelsior. Oh God, I love the weather here. And in some point, I even begin to dozed off a little.

Walked again for AKB48 Shop and spent some of our times there window shopping until suddenly, Da-Chi told me to pick one item and he will pay for it! Thanks Da-Chi!

Without thinking, I went for any Rena’s merchandise that is still in the range of logical pricing. And my choice went to Rena’s coin purse since I was really in a dire need of a coin purse for all my yen coins.

We walked around again and I managed to scores a Blu-Ray internal disc drive for 4000 Yen (Around 40 USD! Compared to the Indonesian price of 85 USD) and some Rena, Haruka, and Chikarina photo packs (Less than a thousand yen for all of it).

280 yen. So each photos went for just 90 or so yen.

We met with Mt.Joss after that and we do some more shopping ahead as I want to buy a Vita Slim. After I got what I want, we went ahead to Akiba Culture Center. In there, I was in shock after I saw Chikarina photos price..

52 Yen….I can’t even find any that is lower than her price

As price indicate their popularity, I really feel I need to support her with all I’ve got once she arrived here in Jakarta..

That being said, we are done here and we decided to go for dinner at Tsukada Nojo/Tsukada Farm. The food is delicious! The waiter attending our table is also very generous with various bonuses he gave us such as the miso paste for me to brought home. Arigatou Oniisan!

We also met another bunch of Indonesian in the restaurant . On the left of our table is two young couple we met on the elevator. Trying to break the cold, I offered them some Indonesian-style kretek cigarette which they kind of like. From there point on, our conversation is keep getting on a very nice mood. Before we left the restaurant, I decided to took some picture as a commemoration of our new-found friend. Here it is :

As usual, we promoted JKT48 to any other people around us, this time, it was Hiro-san, Sachiko-san, and the Waiter. In the end, the waiter gave us a very special gift of that night:

Ginza (Again)

This time Mt. Joss brought us to what he affectionately called Ginza48 . I bet you wonder what the heck is Ginza48? As it turns out…it was a bunny cafe!

If you are wondering what Bunny Cafe is…well..it’s a hang out place with girls wearing skimpy outfit with bunny ear ornament. I think RHKilis can explain this better

The main point of this attraction is that we can share stories with the girls (No touching allowed you guys). No matter what kind of stories without any worries of.. “after effects”, as I would like to put it.

Some of them are really knowledgeable actually being able to follow any kind of stories we threw at them. At one point, one of them even shows me that she’s pretty knowledgeable in terms of Visual Kei’s music. I just told her that I like Japanese music in general and she started her rambling about Visual Kei. Well, she only said the mainstream one, but it is more than enough for me.

We got 5 girls in turns for our table (Tsubaki, Maki, Ruri, Satou, Tsukino). Those who left pretty deep impression on me is Tsubaki and Maki (Not their real name of course). Tsubaki is the girl who knows (mainstream) Visual Kei just like her back alley, while Maki is pretty curious with things and she got a pretty good understanding of English too.

Those two girls really shows that they are not all about face and body, they are not just mere “Entertainment Only Woman”, they got their brain works. Just like an office lady but with different outfit, that’s all. Don’t look down on them. For you male readers, I recommend you to visit a Bunny Cafe if you one day visit Japan. You’ll understand much more about what I’m saying.

Shinjuku (Hatagaya Fudoshon)

Mt. Joss and Da-Chi decided to take me home with Taxi. Alas, I’m not really good with direction and ended up stopping at the wrong place. I said bye to Mt. Joss and Da-Chi pretty confident that I stop at the right place. Only after the taxi went away I realized, I got off on the wrong place

Dunno where I am now, with my mobile phone running off battery, I just wander aimlessly on the street trying to find a payphone only to realized later, I don’t remember my brother phone number in Japan. It was almost in the middle of the night and raining. So yeah, not so many people around to ask for help. Fortunately, I saw a man jogging (Yeah, I kid you not, jogging) in the middle of the rain, in the middle of the night. I called him for help to show me the way to reach Hatagaya Fudoshon.

As it turns out, I still need to walk for around 30 minutes or so to reach Hatagaya Fudoshon . And so there I walk. Back at the apartment at around 11:30 PM and went to bed directly. Thank you Jogging Man!

Last Day

There’s really nothing I could do at the last day aside from packing and packing and packing. I’m sorry I can’t come to the Ikebukuro Book Festival Mr. Yokohama . I finished packing at around 5 PM.

Transportation to airport is pretty easy here with the Airport Limousine (Airport Bus). Leaving all the memories behind, I landed safely at Soekarno Hatta only to be welcomed by a 35 degree Celsius (95 degree Fahrenheit) weather

This data is for comparison with the other Stuffers who went to Japan and using different kind of method:

– My phone bills ended with 850.000 IDR after 10 days in Japan.
– Suica Card costs me 1500-2000 Yen in total after 3 days of using it (Mainly for buses and trains)

Much of my pocket money is being eaten alive actually by buying drinks. As one mineral water will cost me around 120 to 160 yen
