One Year Later: Evaluating International Transfers
by Richardson Kilis · September 2, 2013
The announcement of Rena Nozawa joining AKB48 Team K came shortly after the franchise celebrated one year of its international transfer program. When the 48 sister group memberships were shuffled on 25 August 2012 at Tokyo Dome, fans became anxious at what the transfer program would mean for AKB48 and other groups, especially with popular members being moved overseas.
Although the exchange began as an overseas (海外) transfer program for Japanese members, the addition of Rena to the AKB48 roster has transformed it into an international (国際) transfer program with the potential of seeing additional two-way movements between sisters groups in and outside Japan in the future. Rena’s story, although inevitable given that her family would eventually resettle in Japan when her father’s work assignment was over, has likely become an inspiration for non-Japanese girls seeking join the ranks of 48 sister groups.
Her story, however, is just one perspective into the program’s results. JKT48’s two transfer members Akicha and Haruka have gained a substantial following in Indonesia, but the circumstances of their transfers were very different.
Although fans in Jakarta now see Haruka as an irreplaceable figure within JKT48, especially with her center position in the latest single “Fortune Cookie yang Mencinta”, she did not hold such status within AKB48. What Haruka had, however, was a desire to become an international actress, and the transfer program gave her the opportunity to pursue this dream. This was a risk she took on her own not knowing whether it would pay off in the long run. It should be no surprise then that she committed herself to learning Indonesian as quickly as possible.
Akicha, who joined AKB48 three generations after Haruka, had shot to stardom and reached 12th position during the 2011 senbatsu election. Her meteoric rise was then followed by an equally meteoric drop in popularity in the 2012 election and led to her questioning the security of her own position within AKB48. Her transfer to JKT48 was the perfect opportunity to regain composure as she refocuses her career, and this was clear in the results of the 2013 election as the total votes submitted for her increased dramatically despite slipping in ranking.
Regardless of their initial purposes of moving to Jakarta, Akicha and Haruka are seen as success stories in the transfer program. (It should be noted though that, according to data aggregated by MyJKT48Theater, Akicha has only performed on stage 19 times at JKT48 Theater to date compared to Haruka’s 54.)
But while JKT48 continues its climb in popularity, the transfer program at AKB48’s other international sister group has stalled. Sae Miyazawa’s announcement in declining concurrent positions in SNH48 and AKB48 at the 2013 senbatsu election may have re-energized fans into believing that the program is still alive, how long will it be until management pulls the plug if her Chinese work visa situation is not resolved in the near future? SNH48 Theater opened last week with Sae and Mariya Suzuki nowhere to be seen.
The transfer program was initially projected to last about one year, allowing other members to experience overseas work. I and a few others had speculated that AKB48 management would make some sort of announcement related to the program at this year’s Tokyo Dome concerts, possibly even ending Akicha’s concurrent positions and moving her back permanently to AKB48. Alas, no such announcement was made, and now the transfer program quietly begins its second year in operation.
Such a move (or lack thereof) means that the transfer program is alive and well, at least for now. Even with mixed results, AKB48 management clearly wants to bank on the successes that it has achieved

This is just a dumb noob opinion; this overseas transfer program suppose to be a gateway to promote not only 48 related stuff, but also other positive things between japan and indonesia..
Aki and Haruka indeed the most succesfull example of this program, and (maybe) that is why this program still goes on eventho we rarely see Aki in indonesia..
Me not in the position to comment about SNH, but there is must be a positive things that Sae and Mariya left there..
I always have difficulities to talk about the current situation of Sae and Maria. I don’t want to think this situation has been involved within the 2 countries different recognition. Especially about Sae. She stated good and hard that she concentrates the activities of SNH at last “senbatsu”stage. Sae alraedy possesed the strong heart to lead the little members in Shnaghai. I highly want the dreams of a young and cute girls come true as soon as possible. If she needs something, I do my best for her (but, probably none…).
Interestingly, the results of the exchange program for Akicha & Haruka are contradicting..
I hope Haruka will stay in JKT48, and there will be more transfer member from AKB48 for team KIII..
I hope this “study abroad” program keep continue in the future and many sister group members in japan interest to join JKT48 too especially after see Haruka and Akicha happy story.
I believe that this 48 members exchange will generate the “real global 48 groups”. And this step should be needed for 48 to go toward the whole “new” generation of 48.
I agree with Tomo…maybe a special team just like before but more diverse…
How about GLB48 (GLoBal)?
GLB48?????maybe not..but more like sub unit in AKB48 but more special….they could speak more than 2 or 3 language maybe, english, chinese, bahasa, japan, korean???why not???…that would be awesome!!!
almost all Indonesian member can speak more than 2 languages: Bahasa Indonesia, English, and their traditional language (Javanese,Sundanese,Balinese,Malay,Chinese, etc) wkwkwkwk
That’s the reason why JKT48 is the international 48 better than AKB. I think AKB should have some lessons of several languages. BTW the one member has been acting the character of the TV CM promoting one national qualification through one correspondence course company. So all the members, let start to learn some languages in order to be global
As always, the magnificent Japanse translation. The rich vocabularyies. I admire
Thank you Tomo-san,I’m flattered.
well….i always see that ONLY harugon is succed in this program
Aki,while indeed her vote is increasing, seems like not commited enough for me…..IMHO
Sae and Mariyannu while they seems like comitted enough in this progran but sadly was blocked by deteriorating bilateral relationship beetwen Japan-China
Harugon is really becoming some kind of Indonesian Ambassador in 48 fandom, its really great !
yeah I know, Aki features more often in some tv program that showing Indonesia
but…Harugon speech in Tokyo Dome, shes wearing Indonesian flag in janken, etc etc makes me thinks that SHE is the real representative
anw, this is just IMHO, so dont take it seriously
oh and, I do agree that more AKB member coming to JKT
Aamin maybe, TemoDemo between Aamin and Nyash would be VERY drooling hehehehe (for me)
I remember that in a TV show, Gon said “Aku Suka Disini”. WOW I and we ( probably many Japanese fans) were envious of Gon Gon is highly open and greedy over studying everything in Indonesia. I respect Gon so much
well….i always see that ONLY harugon is succed in this program
Aki,while indeed her vote is increasing, seems like not commited enough for me…..IMHO

i have to admit, at first i was like : mann, why haruka nakagawa? who cares? well, at least theres akicha.
NOW : haruka nakagawa is just the best japanese member from all the groups i want her to stay forever whooohoo, akicha what the hell are you even doing here ?
don’t say that….akicha tries her best to promote JKT48 in her own way…maybe gon is more suited to promote JKT48 in indonesia while akicha tries her best in japan..don’t underestimate their willpower..and it’s tiring to go between indonesia and japan often
“Alas, no such announcement was made, and now the transfer program quietly begins its second year in operation.”
In relation with the overseas transfer program, the August 2012 Tokyo Dome Concert only served as the announcement of said program. The transfer program itself formally began in November 2012. So the transfer program will quietly begin its second year in operation starting from NOVEMBER 2013 and NOT from August 2013.
What the dude above mean is; if this overseas transfer program will end, people at aks suppose to made an announcement as a notification at tokyo dom last month..
But they didn’t, which made us safe to assume that this program still goes on (unless they will announce it later, whenever that is..)
Does anyone know how the members selected? whether they had volunteered or been selected by management? Their result (Akicha and Harugon) will be a benchmark for the other members to be willing to follow the program.
it seems only Haruka that is volunteered..
while the other are chosen..
