After failing to bring home a trophy at last year’s AMI Awards, JKT48 has finally won one of the most prestigious awards in Indonesia’s recording industry with their debut single “RIVER”.
In a report by KapanLagi.com, AMI Awards committee chairman Tantowi Yahya indicated that works released between December 1, 2012, and November 30, 2013, were eligible for nomination. JKT48 was nominated in two categories at the 17th AMI Awards:
In the first category, JKT48 was beaten by veteran comedic band Project Pop. (It should be noted that Project Pop has previously released “BDG40“, a parody song of JKT48’s musical style.) JKT48 was also nominated in this category in 2013 but lost to Cherrybelle.
The second category is a new nomination for JKT48 this year, and it also yielded the group’s first win. The award recognizes the work of the artist, in this case the group’s debut single “RIVER”. Although it is a single award, it comes with two trophies, one for the performing artist and one for the production team responsible for the work.
This represents JKT48’s first win of an award which is not dependent on votes from the public.

Very well done. Honestly, i can’t believe they would make it this time. Because some said they aren’t “Indonesian enough” or “Lacking of nationalism” to be elected as Indonesian best musician. But, hereby it’s attested that i was wrong. So, what’s next? Still any awards to be won?
Ultimately, JKT48 was recognized here only for “RIVER”. The award itself is given for “karya produksi“, the work produced. The jury might have felt that “RIVER” stood above others in terms of overall production quality. Because JKT48 lost to Project Pop in the overall Best Group award, it means that JKT48 is still lacking in some respects an an overall performance group. Only when the weight of the Indonesian-Japanese production team is thrown in does the group have the possibility of winning something.
So, it’s for the production quality not for the music or the group itself, yes? My bad…… i should have known there’s not a single chance for those songs with poor translated lyrics could win the “real” award. Sad…..
(Well, BDG40 said “Just sing, don’t ask because it’s meaningless.” Damn….they really nailed it
)
Regarding “Karya Produksi” or in english “Piece of Work/Piece Production”. One of many definitions of Piece of Work/Piece Production is: “An artistic, musical, or literary work or composition”.
In AMI Awards, one of The Best Piece of Work/Piece Production subcategories is “The Best Piece of Work/Piece Production for Vocal Group” which JKT48 is nominated. As Mr. Kilis has mentioned in this article, this award delivered TWO trophies (two-in-one award I might say) to:
1. JKT48 as THE BEST VOCAL GROUP PERFORMANCE, in other words, AMI Institution appreciated JKT48 very own performance as the BEST VOCAL GROUP (some people confuse this with the BEST VOCAL GROUP in POP/URBAN category which JKT48 lost)
and
2. The production team behind the CREATION of (a) JKT48, the very vocal group itself and (b) JKT48 song “RIVER”, in this one goes to: JKT48 Project Team (Please, don’t confuse it with JOT) aka AKS ltd. co. which consist of Yasushi Akimoto and co.
As for Mr. HERMAN’s concern: “So, it’s for the production quality not for the music or the group itself,”..
Well, that’s a fallacy.
To put it simply and to summarize,
AMI Institution via “The Best Piece of Work/Piece Production for Vocal Group” award, wanted to appreciate JKT48 for its performance as a vocal group and JKT48 Project Team (AKS) for its creations, JKT48 the vocal group and the song “RIVER”, that is.
Thanks for your correction. Sometimes those assorted categories made me dizzy.
“Because JKT48 lost to Project Pop in the overall Best Group award, it means that JKT48 is still lacking in some respects an an overall performance group.”
With all due respect to Project Pop, I wonder what aspects of Project Pop that are better than JKT48 as a group?? Let’s find out:
1. Dancing ability?? Absolutely NOT! Why is that so? Because most of their songs lack high quality and complex dance choreography. Oh God, they rarely even dance! They’re the type of group that perform their singing performance combined with simple “walking or standing around”.
2. Singing ability?? Each members’ vocal quality are just so-so. Tika can sing but the rest of the group?? Sigh…
Number one fact just for those who don’t know: Project Pop members consist of Indonesian comedians.
Once again with all due respect to Project Pop, they’re the so-called comedic music group. I’ve been following Project Pop since long ago. Prior to Project Pop establishment, the founding members were involved in comedy group (yes comedy, not musician) called Padhayangan. All of them are professional comedian in Indonesian entertainment industry. Project Pop were a great success (some people say, mostly their diehard fans, they’re legendary) in 90s. What made them successful, you ask: 1. comedic lyrics combined with 2. simple Pop music.
JKT48 lost because:
– pure idea…nor translated…
– sum…. of sing/show dont/never lypsic… (but not really it is….if we have seen Cerrybelle)…
– sum…. of all JKT48 “work” in indonesian music….. fans target of JKT is little different of other band….
So this part not because of comedy or not…, maybe on some point we can understand it, because we know that are all almost all jkt8 member are not basicly singer nor……. AMI ( Awards “Music” Indonesia)…… it’s about create & maintaning pure, perfect about music…even dance included, but music parts always be the first to count…
