It’s Puntastic!

Twitter timeline burst once more. But this time, it’s not because of member’s graduation or scandal news, or some fan posting his 2-shot photo with member, or another JOT sudden announcement. It is bursts of laughter that, unlike those early firecrackers, echoed to the next daylight from its beginning in the early morning.

It has started since several nights ago, when most fans were awake from late night to early morning preparing or doing sahur ( early morning meal for the next day fasting ). While trying to keep awake during such time, it is common for people to do pastimes to prevent themselves to fall asleep. Telling jokes is one favored thing.

Thus out of nowhere, several meme swarmed the timeline under certain hashtag depicting the theme of that night.

It started with #BukanJKT48 (means “# Not JKT48”), depicting JKT48’s members’ name in particular font style belonging to other Musician / Band. Just take a look at how Metallica transformed into MetaLIDYA, MetaRRICA, and MetAKICHA.

Or Ghaida’s name in the form of MeGHAIDA (Megadeth).

(Somehow I begun to grasp some picture of JKT48’s fans’ musical taste beside JKT48)

The next night is Trade marks / Brand name that become the target of parody. Under #JKT48Brand, we can find Garuda Indonesia, Wendy’s and Bandai transformed into GHAIDA Indonesia, SENDY’s and BADAI ( Ve’s nickname, means Hurricane ).

We can also find Indomie, Nissan and Hanamasa transformed into NAOMIE, NICHAN, and HANNAmasa

The hilariousness escalated as bumper stickers and some truck arts become the target of parody the next night. While those piece of arts reflect daily life condition and struggles, under #NempelJKT48 ( literally means “# Sticking JKT48” ) they reflect fans’ life condition and struggles… as fans.

And last night, #CalegJKT48 flagged a series of works parodying electoral campaigns for local legislative members and government ( CaLeg is acronym of “Calon Legislatif” – Legislative candidate, literally ) It’s not easy not to burst in laughter at

“vote for me, please
but don’t put me in the sack”

( Yupi’s cuteness incite some thought among fans to kidnap her with “put in the sack” method )

or reading some rhyming campaign for Kinal

“Joan of Arc / in the Mirror // Becoming General again / (say) Ame…en”

Indonesians are known for their sense of humor and parody. While for most outsiders it can be irritating, it is actually parts of our daily means for survival. Living with so many people with myriad variety of background and mindset requires us to constantly grease the wheels to reduce unnecessary frictions.

There are of course, times for more serious matters, but this time, let’s enjoy the laughter
