Photography is my hobby since I was in college. Whenever I travel or see cultural festivals, I took some photos. Whenever I had a chance to photo a model, I took it. And whenever I attend a music festival or concert, and if it was possible for me to take some photos, I also took the chance. It was a fun thing for me to photograph scenery, culture, model, and stage performances.
Since I also like JKT48, why not I combine those two hobbies all together? My first opportunity to take photos of the group was during Popcon Asia 2012 (29.06.2012). I took photos for the sake of fun. Back then, I didn’t even know all the members’ name, except Melody and Nabilah. I remembered when I share the photos on Twitter, I had to ask my friend first to know the member’s name. There were not many photographers back then.
On the following months, JKT48 had performed on many occasions. The crowds are getting bigger. Many fans who also love photography attend their performances. Those actions in some way help to increase members’ popularity. The members’ photo are shared on social media along with their name, helping fans to recognize new names aside of the popular Melody and Nabilah. Other fans who didn’t attend the event receive the benefit of knowing how their favorite members performing by checking the uploaded photo galleries.
My second experience in photographing JKT48 performing was on their first concert on RCTI titled “Warnai Harimu” (17.02.2013). Several fans were allowed to come to the studio and took photographs. That was the first time JKT48’s second generation performed live on the stage.
JKT48 performed in many Dahsyat show in 2013. Knowing that there are too many fans came for each show, I decided not to come. Until I saw the photos my friends took on each show, it began to make me curious to at least come once to the show. In the end of the day, I came to four Dashyat shows. The first one was so crowded that I give up taking photos. I came early for the second and third ones. Then Dahsyat changed its format. Previously, many shows were shot outside, and we were free to take photos. The new format had JKT48 performed inside the studio. I only took photos once on their first new format’s show before it was later forbidden to have amateur photographers inside. Since then I mostly took photographs of JKT48 during open event and handshake festivals.
The numbers of amateur photographers who love JKT48 were increasing in time. Some of them even equipped themselves with professional cameras and lenses. Some of them even become popular thanks to their photography works. Each popular photographer has its own distinctive style and tone. Few took photos showing the group’s choreography, while others took photo of a member’s individual action. Some photographers grouped themselves and tried to publish a free fans magazine, while others only share as it is on Twitter and Flickr.
Now new documentation photos by fans are appearing in mere hours just after JKT48 performed. Each fan could share 10-30 photos a day. Multiply it with the numbers of photographers, we could see hundreds of photos a day shared by fans. They mention the member on Twitter, hoping that the photos are seen and saved by them. And from my experiences, many members are saving those photos on their phone. During an OFC event, a member showed me her saved photos from Twitter. Another member once also said thanks to me for the photos. They had the photos saved for their personal collections. From what I’ve heard, it’s a treatment that they hardly receive from official management.
Back in the day, the officials have fans as competitors that could also provide photos of members. While many of them are still learning in taking photos, there are still lots of them that could take good photos, even though they were limited in access. Perhaps that is why the officials Facebook page was always up to date and provided many photos for the fans. Competition drove them to be better.
Nowadays, the photo albums on JKT48’s official Facebook page are barely up to date and the collections are a bit off. Added with their newest decision to prohibit amateur photographers from their recent events (with the purpose of preventing any individuals taking profits from the photos or even posting some inappropriate one for better or worse), the management’s documentation team will face bigger challenges to provide an up to date and decent photos of the members to satiate the fans’ demand.
Anyway, I would like to share some of my favorite JKT48 “amateur” photographers (in no particular order). If you know more that have good quality, don’t hesitate to add it on the comment form.
Nice article.. Thanks for the reference ..
My boss’ son is also a JKT48 photographer, and he always brings his dad camera to take those photos, with rented zoom lens I guess, haha.
