Another NEW Collaboration between Indonesia and Japan
After the high attention given to the indie developer Digital Happiness for their homage to Fatal Frame with “DreadOut”, We will see another gaming studio based in Indonesia and this time, it is another collaboration between Indonesia and Japan with Square Enix involved in it.
An excerpt from their official website :
SQUARE ENIX SMILEWORKS is a game developer in Surabaya, Indonesia. It’s founded by 3 companies from Japan, first is SQUARE ENIX HOLDINGS CO., LTD. , Gotanda Denshi Co., Ltd. , and last SMILE-LAB Co., Ltd
Our Mission is make the world smile with optimal entertainment service through coordination between the Indonesian-Japanese
In the Game Network Jakarta 2013 event, Square Enix announced that they founded a new studio in Surabaya-Indonesia named Square Enix Smileworks. The studio will have the “Special mission to spread the smile to the world through good entertainment based on the harmonization of Indonesia an Japan relationship,” Explained CEO Hiroaki Kanamaru.
“Smileworks was founded this May. But since last December we started to develop games in Indonesia with a company named Gotanda Denshi,” He explained. “Currently we have 30 employees working in the studio. Currently we do focus more on localization but for the future we would like to develop game in Indonesia. In fact, we already have a plan to create an original Indonesian game.”
“Indonesians have the ability to create game,” he added. “Their skills are as great as the rest of the world.”
Kanamaru also talks about the local game market.
“For now, Indonesian market is still in the low-end. Even so, there’s a prediction that in 10 years Indonesia economy will be on par with Japan. We hope the same thing would happen with the game market.”
Square Enix Smileworks is a studio that focused themselves on PC and Mobile platform. Their titles is in the distribution line for South East Asia and Japan and will be distributed to a handful of Asian countries such as Indonesia, Thailand and Singapore.
Hopefully one day we will have a dance game or even love simulation game or even perhaps RPG! based on JKT48 developed by Square Enix Smileworks and published by Square Enix. Who Knows? Cross your fingers

I hope this partnership will fare better than Gameloft which opened a game studio in Yogyakarta few years ago, but once went through a dispute.
you mean that famous SQUARE ENIX who made a lot of great games like Final Fantasy, Front Mission, Dragon Quest and many other great games.
I’m so curious to know what kind of game that will be created by SQUARE ENIX this time. With this the children can enjoy their childhood with another good game.

How about Lara Croft’s Tomb Raider in Indonesia. Sounds interesting. So many tombs can be raided here.
me think they will make zombie hunt (JKT vs zombies)..
with a little taste of 3rd person shooter action rpg ala Dirge of Cerberus, bullet fest-trigger happy girls shooting out freaking zombies that will turn ordinary fans into one of them..
Damn! What a jenius idea! Yes, yes…..that’ll be a winning awards-best seller- ass kickin’-game of the year. I can’t help to imagine playing as Melody’s character armed to the teeth. Taking on wave after wave of unrelenting zombies wearing JKT48’s swags. Mowing them with a barrage from a mounted heavy machine gun. Or kick some JKT48 zombie asses with a fully upgraded shotgun in Bloodbath Arena (read: Theatre). Man, this game’ll make Resident Evil looks as silly as Tetris or Pac Man.
And why don’t we make the title a little bit more “scary”, like: “Theatre of the Dead” , “Girls among the Dead”,or “Setlist of Horror”, perhaps?

I hope they make a simulation game about JKT48 members. where the player can be a manager that manage JKT48 member. player have to arrange member schedule, help solving member problem in school, theater or home, and support JKT48 member to reach their dream to do their own concert. or maybe they could make JKT48 dating simulation games.
