Kinal 17th Birthday Translation

Just another lazy author for JKT48Stuff whom mainly working with translations and sometimes writing articles about JKT48 with an obvious grammar problem. Was living his life as a JKT48 DD until...

Uhm…anyone care to explain, how come Kinal was elected as the captain of the famous Team J? So I can understand about the drill much clearly without headache, because I didn’t remember there were any senbatsu(s) for JKT48. Kinal is good, though, but I have seen better. (No offense, just asking. Peace man, don’t take it personally , but I really, really love Melody as the Captain, Center, Leader, Big Boss or whatever.)

As far as Captain position concerned, it got nothing to do with Senbatsu nor stars or even circles

Anyway joking aside, Melody already stated her stance a few times implicitly for any captaincy position and she simply knows her own capability and limit for that position thus a few times rejecting any notion of her as a captain/leader.

I don’t particularly know the process of how choosing a captain in JKT48, but usually and as far as I know, a Captain or a leader is chosen from the observation made on how big the members trust to one and how big the impact and positive influence one could give to the members.

As far as I know, the captain position has always been elected by management. And the senbatsu more reflects the center (highest rank overall) and ace (highest rank in teams) positions as chosen by fans.

Why Kinal was chosen may be revealed one day by staff until then it’s us speculating.
She does have some decent stats that make her fit for the position though: Fast learner and able to teach other members dance steps, she took the initiative(?) to lead warm-ups or maybe it was suggested to her, she’s young enough to grow with JKT over the next few years. She appears well liked by the other members and the KKS listened to her in wrapped attention in the ‘Car Free Day’ official video. Decent MC. She seemed to be the number 1 or 2 choice of the fandom since Kagami no Naka no Jean Da Arc.

Also, Melody not getting “captain” shouldn’t damage her reputation in any way, most of the captains aren’t Aces except maybe Sayanee from NMB48? And now Yuko for new-new team K.

Agree with Angga and kurisu, leadership position has nothing to do with Senbatsu. As far as I can remember, it is quite rare that foremost-in-senbatsu members become the Captain of the team she belongs to. CMIIW, beside Sayanee, Chuuri is another example that fits into Front-and-Leader pattern.

I think it is more about group dynamics. Kinal is right at the center of the group: can support those who are weak as well as cheering thow who are weak, well respected by her senior as well as junior, gentle and funny as well as firm and decisive ( you can check many of her pics and video for this ). Her versatility is her strongest asset for leadership position, especially when the group is filled with multitalented person with varied background. I mentioned ‘group’ instead of ‘team’ for a purpose btw :)

Okay, I was wrong. Long live our new captain Devi Kinal Putri !! So, who’s the center now? Is Melody still in charge? Haven’t seen them on TV since Kinal’s election. Theater? Naaaah I’ll pass. Too much to handle. (You know, apply this, apply that. With no result as always.)

The center is the representative of whole group, if you’re more familiar with k-pop, the center is the “visual”, the face. They don’t particularly hold power though, it’s a powerful position but it’s not like they get to have a lot of say.

In music videos, major television and stage performances they stand at point “0” on the stage. (Why I think the term is “center”, to indicate “center stage”.)

With Maeda Astuko, she was the chosen center by management and slowly she grew into her role. But since she’s graduated, in AKB48 no one has taken her role. Management won’t write a press release, but they will imply through letting certain girls stand center in songs. If Mayuyu stands center during “Flying Get” during a show, people talk among themselves and some proclaim her to her new center, etc.

I think Melody has been center since day one and it’s heavily implied… but management will most likely never explicitly say she’s center, it’s better for there to be gossip and speculation about whether Shania or Nabilah… or Beby, even, will take her “throne”. The members are all rivals. If there’s ever an election, fans will want to back their oshimen as much as possible, which will only drive up sales.

Thanks for the translations as always. Interesting comments. I’ve always wondered how certain positions are chosen in the 48G. Also, I didn’t know “center” and “ace” where two different things I just thought they were one in the same.

It’s all pretty confusing and it takes a while to get a hang of it…
(It still gets a little confusing for myself at times too.)

Basically: There is only one center per group (AKB48, NMB48, JKT48… etc).
But when people talk stages and songs, they say “center” also. And in this context, it means this person (center) is the lead for this particular song.

Ace can get confusing also because, the center is also an ace: Acchan was the center for AKB48, as well as being the ace of Team A.

The title of “ace” isn’t always determined by senbatsu too, it can also be determined by management. For example, HKT48’s center is Kodama Haruka (I believe) but for their first ever single, the center for the song was Tashima Meru, a 2nd generation ACE.

      Confusing yes?

I still don’t understand the role & responsibilities of a captain..

In AKB48 they have Takamina as leader of the entire group, and each captain for each team A, K, and B..

    Pretty confusing..
